THE GREEN SHIFT: PANTONE COLOUR OF THE YEAR
Have you ever imagined your life without colour?
Bland, dull, monochromatic… the world would be a dreary place.
Much of life’s beauty is found in its vibrant kaleidoscope of hues. Colour carries emotion. It helps us connect with the world on a deeper level, transmitting subliminal messages that influence the way we think and feel.
We can’t always pinpoint why a deep blue inspires a calm wave of tranquility…
or why a bright red suddenly sparks a fiery passion inside of us.
Colours trigger our memories and subconscious thoughts, often before we even realize it’s happening. This is why being aware of colour choice is so important in all aspects of our lives and in all aspects of design.
Colour impacts the way we see the world around us.
Every year, Pantone, the world’s leading colour authority chooses its colour of the year. After careful consideration and an analysis of worldwide trends from film, art, fashion, design, travel, lifestyle, technology, and socio-economic conditions, the 2017 colour of the year was announced.
Greenery is reminiscent of the fresh and zesty first days of spring. It is meant to evoke feelings of renewal, rejuvenation, and restoration.
We’re at a time in history when the fate of the natural world is at a crossroads. Climate change is accelerating, urban sprawl has distanced us from one another, and the craving to reconnect and immerse ourselves in nature is dominating our synthetic lives.
“While Serenity and Rose Quartz, the PANTONE Color of the Year 2016, expressed the need for harmony in a chaotic world,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute “Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the hope we collectively yearn for amid a complex social and political landscape. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate, revitalize, and unite, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another, and a larger purpose.”
Pantone took a unique approach this year, partnering with Airbnb. Together the brands plan to create a nature-based experience to symbolize the vitality, exploration and belonging inspired by Greenery.
We’re interested to see the many applications for Pantone colour of the year. Greenery is the colour of innovation. How innovative will 2017 really be? We’ll have to wait and see.
